On Thin Ice is a main quest in Skellige. This is the beginning of the final quests for the main game, so make sure you have completed all the side quests you want before entering this quest or that you have an additional save. When you are all set, go speak to Avallac’h to begin the quest.

Avallac’h is filling in the sorceresses on their job during the ambush on the Wild Hunt. He will use the Sunstone to summon the Hunt, while the Lodge prevents them from retreating with their magic and Emperor Emhyr's fleet stops the ship physically. From there, Geralt needs to attack the ship and fight Caranthir and Eredin. Ciri is not happy about waiting on the sidelines. Avallac’h can tell that she cannot be stopped. Ciri teleports onto the frozen water and enters a rage in front of the Hunt

You finally take control of Ciri and can attack the Warriors of the Wild Hunt. This rage mode allows you to one-hit every single enemy. Slice and dice through the three warriors and run straight ahead. When you start up the hill, quite a few Warriors and Hounds teleport in and surround you. Make quick work of them and continue through the ice. One more wave of Warriors will teleport. Quickly kill them and then hop off the ledge down to the open area where Caranthir waits.

Boss Battle: Caranthir

Caranthir is the third member of the Wild Hunt crew that you will face. Caranthir is a two part boss battle with both Ciri and Geralt. With control of Ciri, the first part of this fight is rather simple. Caranthir will teleport behind Ciri frequently and swing his staff. He does not cast any magic. Simply use your rage mode to dash toward him and slash at him.

When you whittle down roughly 1/3 of his health an epic cutscene will happen where Ciri destroys Caranthir’s staff. This breaks the ice curse that has frozen Geralt. Ciri is knocked out by this powerful blast, but Geralt walks down to finish off Caranthir.

This half of the fight is different than Ciri’s half. Caranthir will use magic predominantly during this fight. He has three specific attacks. The first is a row of five ice balls that he will fire. Simply roll beneath it to stay safe; better yet roll toward Caranthir so you can be within striking distance. His next attack, which follows the row, is three more percise ice blast shot one at a time.

You’ll need to dodge out of the way of each blast. Again, try and roll toward Caranthir. When you are close enough, you have enough time to strike him once or twice before he teleports away. Repeat this attack pattern of dodging blasts and striking.

When Caranthir is near half health, he will summon an Ice Elemental. Don’t fret though! Instead of fighting it, let Caranthir take it out. Keep the Ice Elemental between you and Caranthir. When Caranthir shoots his magic at you, it will hit the Ice Elemental first and kill it after three hits.

Then close the gap between you and the Huntsman and strike. Remember to use Igni on Caranthir if he has an ice shield surrounding him. If you keep dodging the ice blasts and use them to kill any Ice Elementals, this fight will be over before you know it.

Caranthir has one final trick to try and kill Geralt along with him. He teleports the two of them beneath the ice and into the water. Swim straight up and avoid the debris. When you surface, you see the battle unfold. Ciri teleports away from Warriors of the Wild Hunt and a Skellige ship crashes into the Naglfar.

When you gain control of Geralt again you are tasked with boarding the Hunt’s ship. Some Skellige warriors will be fighting the Hunt along the way. There are Warriors and Hounds. You may help out if you wish, but if you are low on health potions it may be best you to bolt for the ship. On board, Eredin is waiting for you.

Boss Battle: Eredin

Eredin is the fourth and final member of the Wild Hunt crew. This boss battle is long and taxing, but is more than doable. The key to the entire fight is being patient and not becoming greedy with your strikes. When you try to wail on Eredin, he will hit back—hard and fast. Quen is your best friend during this fight. Make sure to use it often.

At the start of the battle, Eredin will slash toward you. He usually has combos that last for three swings. Your goal is to dodge your way behind him. Don’t be afraid to roll if you need that extra distance away from him. At the end of Eredin’s combos, there is a small window for one or two strikes. Take them. After you land your blows, Eredin will either parry your attacks or teleport. Either way, dodge away and try to get behind him again. He does have an ice shield, so use Igni to melt it so your attacks do more damage.

When roughly 25% of Eredin’s health is gone, he grabs Geralt and teleports the two of them to a mountain top. Eredin then teleports away from Geralt and sends out a shockwave from his sword. Roll out of the way, trying to get closer to your foe. The next shockwave splits into three parts. Roll to the left or right, and try to strike Eredin.

After you land a hit or two, the leader of the Wild Hunt will teleport again. This time, instead of a shockwave, Eredin sends out magical mines. You will see the ground glow beneath your feet. Simply roll toward Eredin and hit him to end the explosions. Another new attack is to call down ice from above. Similar to the mines, you will see a glow at your feet. Dodge out of the way to avoid being frozen.

When Eredin has lost 75% of his health, he will become more aggressive with sword attacks. Keep up your patience and slowly take down his health. Around loosing 90% of his health, Eredin will teleport back to the Naglfar. Dodge the ice meteors and head through the portal. Back on the ship, dodge his blade and take out his remaining health. At the end of the long fight, Eredin and Geralt finally see eye to eye.

Eredin’s parting words are how Avallac’h has taken Ciri from under both your noses! Yennefer teleports in and saves Geralt from a swam of Hounds and the final quest automatically begins.
